Backyard visitor

The trees are pretty bare this time of year so this owl wasn’t too difficult to see from a distance.  I got within 50 feet before snapping this photo.

Buck Rub?

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

Never heard of it before yesterday but walking with my class thru the garden, we were shown the incredible damage a deer can do to a young tree.  Young trees with higher branches are targeted because the antlers don’t get hung up.  Use plastic netting as shown and hopefully your tree will make it through the winter.

Rabbits; again

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

I spent weekends “battening down the hatches” on my yard; covered each fence area with chicken wire, then black landscaping carpet.  i even got my kids to join in the fun – nothing like using a staple gun randomly along a fence line!  As we were working our way around the yard, I had the image of 1 of the rabbits sitting behind me, munching on a plant, laughing as I labored away trying to keep him out.  I decided I had to try to re-create the image and with the help of Ed Pollick (www.edwardpollick.com) I have the image to show you.  Enjoy!

Rabbits, revisited

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Well, its a year later and I’m still fighting them off!  I have fencing which has chicken wire stapled to it and then I attached weed matts.  Along the bottom of the fence I used rail road ties. I was feeling pretty good about my yard…

Then one night this summer, I walked out into the yard and saw the cutest baby bunny snacking away on a plant.  3 dogs; all those fence layers and they still find their way in!  At least I tried!

Rabbits!

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

I live in a chicago suburb and we have so many rabbits.  I have put chicken wire around the fence, covered the wire with brick and railroad ties (at ground level) but I still find my plants are chewed to the ground!  Does anyone have any suggestions?
